If you saw the movie Schindler's List, you certainly remember the little girl in the red coat. Her coat was the only color in a moving black and white scene. You can achieve the same effect easily with Avid Liquid.
- Drag your selected clip to the Liquid timeline. This should be a clip with one prominent object that you want to leave colored. Click the clip to select it.
- Click the cube-shaped icon above your timeline. This lets you select from different editors. Choose the Color Corrector. Your clip will then appear in the right-hand window of the Color Corrector, with a vectorscope in the left-hand window. Click the bottom middle arrow button, located between and below the two windows, to extend the dialog area of the Color Corrector. Once you do, it will expand to cover the timeline.
- Next, you'll need to isolate the color that you want to keep. There are four panels in the lower part of the Color Corrector interface. Click the square box at the top of the Selective Color panel to activate selective color. Then, click the large plus sign at the top of the Selective Color panel. This will let you choose your color. Drag a small rectangle over the object you want to retain in the right-hand window. After you do, you'll see a small dot in the Selective Color panel's color wheel. This represents the area that you selected.
- Now you'll need to adjust your selection to make sure you're getting the whole object. Move the hue slider (the fifth slider under the color wheel) to test how much of your object's color has been selected. This will show you if anything is missing. You can refine your choice by adjusting the three Range sliders to the right of the color wheel. They control Luminance, Saturation, and Hue. Adjust them until you've selected the entire object in the video. After you've finished, further refine your selection by adjusting the Softness sliders for Luminance, Saturation, and Hue. When you're done, the selected color area should be well-defined. Move the Hue slider (the one under the color wheel) back and forth to be sure.
- Just to the right of the Hue slider you'll see a dot. Click it. This resets the slider to its default value.
- Finally, you're going to invert your selection, so that rather than selecting that one object, you're selecting everything else in the video. Click outside the color wheel, but within the square border that surrounds it. This inverts your selection. To convert that selection to grayscale, move the saturation slider as far left as it will go, to a value of -255. This drains the color from the rest of the image and leaves your selected object as the only color.
