The Basic's

In this tutorial you will learn a few different effects you can do with motion guide lines. This tutorial was created on/for Flash 4 but I think it should also work on 5.

First off create a new document. Make sure that your "snap" tool is turned on. (View>Snap) In the first keyframe draw an object like a ball in one corner. Select the ball and convert it to a symbol (F8) . Insert a keyframe on the 20th frame and right click on the space between the to keyframes and select Create Motiontween. Then select the layer that your ball is on and hit the Add Guide Layer like it's shown in the figure.

Then, on the Guide layer, take you pencil tool and draw a wavy line the way you would like your object to move. Don't be concerned with color because this guide will not show in your final project. Select the first keyframe and select the center of the ball and drag it to the end of the motion guide line and it should "snap" to the end. Now select the last keyframe and do the same with the ball at the end of the guide line. Now hit test movie (Control>Test Movie) and test out for new animation. The ball should follow the invisible guide line.
