| FK: And is this user experience just about web sites? Are there other areas
where this design philosophy can be applied?
|
| NB: Oh yes. Experience design is all around us. Architects understand it.
Movie directors understand it. Musicians understand it. And things are
moving more and more this direction. When you're in a mall, let's say the
Universal City Walk in Hollywood, you're participating in an experience
centered design. Architecturally, the way you move through the space, the
way the facades dance and change, the sounds, the way other people move
around you, the placement of restaurants, benches, trees etc. all are
designed with you in mind. With you and your experience in that space as the
center. I come from the video games industry and this is what we do all the
time. That's all a game is a giant user experience. From the moment the user
plugs in the cart to the end when they shut off the TV, we provide a planned
experience. What we've done at Balthaser is take that mentality and infuse
it into online experiences. It's just the beginning and you will find
experience design creeping its way into everything from homes that you buy
to cars that you drive, to the computers that you use and finally to the
software that is running on them.
|
| FK: And that's what Microsoft means by their "XP" moniker?
|
| NB: I've read that "XP" stands for, "experience". I don't know what they
mean by experience. I can only tell you what I mean.
