Creating Custom Cursor in Flash 5

Are you bored of the old blocky cursor why not even I was bored until I found that I could replace it with the one I like. So, why not try to replace it with your own. Creating Custom Cursor in Flash 5 is easy. You just need a design for your cursor and some code.

First design the cursor you want it could be either a one framed movie clip or a movie clip with animations. Now select the cursor designed (or the one you designed) then hit F8 and save it as a movie clip with any name in this case it is ?mycursor?.

Before we do the coding you should know what each line of code is going to do exactly,
  • onClipEvent (load) :- As the handler suggests it executes when the clip is loaded.
  • Mouse.hide() :- This would be used to hide the present mouse cursor.
  • StartDrag(this,true) :- Use this object to make the cursor draggable with the one you hided.

But remember the Actionscript coding in Flash is Case Sensitive and should be typed in as defined or you may end up with some thing else or may be nothing.

Now select the cursor instance and open the Windows->Actions Tab and type in the code defined below:

onClipEvent (load) {

Now, test the movie Control -> Test movie Here you are with your new own cursor.

· By this you should have understood that the cursor is not exactly replaced but first it is made invisible and a new instance is set to draggable with the original cursor both would be moving around as you move your mouse but the original one would be hidden and the one you created would be only visible but it would not do any operations like clicking it?s the hidden cursor which does?.to understand what I said remove the Mouse.hide() line from the code and run the movie and try clicking some buttons.

As this is my first tutorial I hope you did not find anything complicated of course there are many other ways of creating a custom cursor with other beautiful advanced functions offered by Flash 5 but this is one of the simplest and the easiest way to get it done.

» Description: Hmm... what to say about this one? It's reminiscent of the closing notes of the opening music from the Three Stooges done in a church organ style with a closing cymbal crash. I'll give this one away gratis, but feel free to check out my free loops and potential upcoming license-mandated ones over in the respective part of Flashkit.
