Okay, first have a picture of your character facing up in the middle of the screen. NOT an MC of him walking. Now select it, right-click (CTRL-click MAC), and hit convert to symbol. Select "Movie Clip" and name it "Character" and hit OK.
Now double-click the Character MC so you're inside it. Name the first layer "Character". Add 7 blank keyframes (F7) to that layer so you now have 1 frame with the person on it and 7 other blank keyframes.
Go to Insert, Layer, and name that new layer "Actions". Make it so there are 8 key frames on the Actions layer. Select one of the keyframes on the Actions layer and hit F9 to bring up the actions pannel. Make sure you're expert mode. Post the following code into the actions pannel:
stop();
