Now, on to the last script, the "bigstars1" object, our field of larger stars. This object is perhaps the most important to the effect of flight simulation, because it is seeing the large stars go by faster than the smaller ones that puts across a real feeling of motion through space. As you will see, the script is extremely similar to the "starfield1" object. Put the following code in the "bigstars1" Action box:
onClipEvent(load)
{
thrust = 0;
}
onClipEvent (enterFrame)
{
approachSpeed = (.3 * thrust);
this._height+=approachSpeed;
this._width+=approachSpeed;
if (Key.isDown(Key.TAB))
{
if (thrust <=9)
{
thrust+=1;
}
}
if (Key.isDown(Key.CONTROL))
{
if (thrust>= -12)
{
thrust-=1;
}
}
}
It is actually the exact same script as the one for "starfield1", except for one number. The
"approachSpeed" variable is (.08*thrust) for the small stars and (.03*thrust) for the larger
ones. It is this tiny difference in that variable that makes the effect work. The movie
should now be ready to run, and to add your own effects. I hope this helped a few of you
who are interested in making first-person space games in Flash 5. -Ian Rose
