Setting up the second section of the PHP script
The second section of the php script is executed when a user finishes the game and goes to the game over screen. When then enter their name and press the submit button the command variable is sent to the php script with a value of "update". The php script checks for this value and then executes the second section of code below. The name entered is sent as the value to variable "name" and the users final score is sent as the value to variable "score".
if ($command=="update"){
$link = @mysql_connect("localhost", "YOURUSERNAME","YOURUSERPASSWORD");
if (!$link){
print "&players=Error connecting to database";
exit;
}
if (!@mysql_select_db("YOURDATABASENAME")){
print "&players=Couldn't select database";
exit;
}
$players = "";
$scores = "";
$query = "SELECT scores FROM highscores where players = '$name'";
$result = @mysql_query($query);
if(@mysql_num_rows($result)>0){
$oldScore = mysql_result($result,"scores");
if($score>$oldScore){
$query = "UPDATE highscores SET scores = '$score' where players = '$name'";
$result = @mysql_query($query);
}
else{
exit;
}
}
else {
$query ="INSERT INTO highscores (players, scores) VALUES ('$name', '$score')";
$result = @mysql_query($query);
}
$innerquery = "SELECT * FROM highscores ORDER BY scores DESC";
$innerresult = @mysql_query($innerquery);
$numPlayers=mysql_num_rows($innerresult);
for($loop=0;$loop<$numPlayers; $loop++) {
$newPlayer = mysql_result($innerresult,$loop,"players");
$newScore = mysql_result($innerresult,$loop,"scores");
$players = "$players
$newPlayer";
$scores = "$scores
$newScore";
}
printf("&players=%s", $players);
printf("&scores=%s", $scores);
mysql_close($link);
}
?>
Let's breakdown the code
I'll only be annotating the new code in this section of the php script as there is a lot of code in the second section which I've already covered
$query = "SELECT scores FROM highscores where players = '$name'"; $result = @mysql_query($query);Here the SQL command attempts to select the past score of the user who submitted his/her name.
if(@mysql_num_rows($result)>0){
$oldScore = mysql_result($result,"scores");
if($score>$oldScore){
$query = "UPDATE highscores SET scores = '$score' where players = '$name'";
$result = @mysql_query($query);
}
If the users name is found in the mySQL table then the oldScore variable is created with a
value of the users score in the database. The code then tests to see if the new score is
higher than the old score. If it is higher then the an SQL statement is executed which
replaces the old score with the new.
else {
$query ="INSERT INTO highscores (players, scores) VALUES ('$name', '$score')";
$result = @mysql_query($query);
}
If the name value sent from the Flash game is not found in the database then a new row is
added to our database and the new data is inserted.
The rest of the code in this section is identical to the code in the first section which builds the high scores data, only this time the new users data will be included in the refreshed results. This is the php close tag.
