Setting up the Action Scripting
This tutorial assumes that you have a working Flash game which takes the player to a new "Game Over" frame when their game is over. In this frame the Flash movie tells the player his/her final score using a dynamic text field. It is essential that a variable called "score" exists in your flash movie which needs to contain the player's final score.
Create an input text field for the player to input their name. This text field needs to be called "name". Create a submit button and on top of it place the following code:
on (release) {
if(name ne ""){
command = "update";
this.loadVariables("highscores.php?"+int(Math.random()*100000), "POST");
gotoAndStop ("highScores");
}
}
This script checks for text in the name text field (otherwise you will end up with a score on your high scoreboard and no name associated with it. This script also creates a variable called command and gives it a value of "update" which will be interpreted by our php script. The loadVariables code sends all of the variables on the main timeline of our flash game to our php script. By creating a random number after the highscores.php URL we ensure that the script it always executed and not cached by our Flash movie.
On the first frame of the main timeline put the following code:
command = "init";
this.loadVariables("highscores.php?"+int(Math.random()*100000), "POST");
This script loads the initial set of players and scores for the high scoreboards.
