Flash basic tutorial- Variables, if you don't understand them already then read this- Variables are pieces of data that store other data. This data can be anything. For instance in my game there is an “Info” bar at the top, this is an active variable as it changes when a certain event occurs, such as the selector being on attack or magic etc. To do this: 1. On frame 1 create a variable called info>Right click the first frame>Frame actions>Expert mode (Click this arrow or press Ctrl+E) Then type “info” (Without the quotation marks). Ignore the code in that box. 2. Create a textbox>Right click the textbox>Panels>Text options Then choose dynamic text box from the drop-down menu. In the empty space below the drop-down menu type: “info”. Explaining the _root In some cases you may have a movie clip inside a movie clip relating to a variable somewhere else, if this is the case then you must put “_root.variable name”. This tells flash to go to the top or the start of the hierarchy. So if something isn’t working it’s a good idea to check whether it needs a _root. 3. Create a movie clip>Create a picture or drawing you wish to turn into the movie clip>Select it>Insert>Convert to symbol>Movie clip Name the movie character, though at this point names don’t matter. Then give it an Instance name, this is where the name matters.>Right click the symbol you have jus created>Panels>Instance>Name the Instance character Instances are used as a reference for flash. 4. New variable with value Create a new variable called “moveSpeed” following the steps performed in step one, only this time put: moveSpeed=5 This tells the value of moveSpeed to equal 5. The reason we use variables instead of just a plain number is because you can use them over and over and change the values to make different things happen. 5. Character Actions After creating the new variable>Right click the character movie clip>Actions Now copy and paste this code; onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) { this._x += _root.moveSpeed; } else if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) { this._y -= _root.moveSpeed; } else if (Key.isDown(Key.DOWN)) { this._y += _root.moveSpeed; } else if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) { this._x -= _root.moveSpeed; } } OnclipEvent (enterframe) this tells the movie to do this when the frame it’s on is entered. if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) { this._x += _root.moveSpeed This will check for a true or false. It says if the user is pressing a key which is the right arrow then do this (the data in between the { }. Then the this._x+=_root.moveSpeed tells flash that if the if statement was true to add motion on the x axis (horizontal) of the value of moveSpeed. The else statements say if it’s not this and it’s this then do new line of code. else if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) { this._y -= _root.moveSpeed; This is if it’s up and not right then it will make the character go up. (y vertical axis). Same for down and left. 6. Create a new movie clip symbol>Follow the steps shown previously>Call the movie “test”>Go to the symbols actions and type this: onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.character.hitTest(this)) { _root.info="Hit"} } This tells flash to find out if the character movie is touching the current movie test. “this” always refers to the current movie.
