Categories Understanding Operators

String operators are used to evaluate and compare strings. A practical application for these operators would be searching and sorting names. Be careful not to mixed up your data types when evaluating expresssions. I keep harping on this fact but as a novice programmer it would have to be one of the greatest sources of mistakes.

The first operator is the string operator, "". When ever you see these in an expression they will indicate to you and the computer that whatever is in between the quote marks is a string of characters.

The & symbol is for concatenatation. Simply put, you would use this when you want to append a string, variable or function onto the end of another string, variable or function. It is important to note that any numbers used in a string expression will be automatically converted to a string. ie

Set Variable: "age" = 5
Set Variable: "message" = "I am " & age & " years old"

This will give the variable 'message' the string value of "I am 5 years old".

The rest of the operators (eq, ne, gt, lt, le, ge) are called comparison operators because you use them to compare between strings or variables assigned a string. Their main function is to determine the alphabetical order based on the first letter of the string. This isn't to say you can't compare the second and third letters, it just that these just require a bit more scripting (see the Substring function).

Important Note: Strings are case sensitive, "Hi" does not equal "hi" and small letters are greater than capital letters. This is a little confusing at first but if you look at an ASCII table, the code for the letter 'A' is 65 and the code for the letter 'a' is 97. (every letter, number and symbol on your keyboard is assigned a unique ASCII code, there are many other, non-keyboard, codes but you don't need to know about these at this point.)

Here are some examples of string operators in action.

Set Variable: "input" = "john"
Set Variable: "accountname" = "joe"
If (input eq accountname)
 Set Variable: "output" = "Hello, " & accountname & " welcome back"
Else
Set Variable: "output" = "User not recognised"
End If
