Where are you
from?
A comedians dream a real cultural mongrel, born in England,
lived in New Zealand, Tasmania (Australia) and now Sydney.
Any local readers will find it very very easy to string
together a high powered cultural assault from those origins!
Where did you
grow up?
All over the place. Though I think I would say my most formative
years were in Tasmania over my university degree, I am sure
it was good for me, but remains a five year blur with a
huge grin on my face.
What are your
pastimes and interests?
Rock climbing, swimming, skiing, being massaged, designing,
watching dvd;s, cranking great music, and about to get my
paragliding license.
What's your
favorite saying or cliché?
"I'll be back", no I think that's someone else's.
I have a collection of peculiar mannerisms, I am not sure
I want to list them though!
What's your
favorite movie?
I have many, top 5 would have to be Braveheart, Brazil,
Little Mermaid, The Indiana Jones series, and while its
not a movie the X files first two series.
What's your
favorite cocktail?
The one I have drunk to the most deadly effect and regularly
is the Long Island Iced tea, love em! I did have a very
dangerous year of the bushfire once, (half Tabasco, half
tequila) though that resulted in severe stomach trauma post
every time. I also enjoy a good pina colada.
When did you
first get involved with flash?
I used futuresplash the first incarnation of it all to make
an animated gif once :D
Then I left flash alone for a long long time, until late
99 when I started to do some commercial flash work. I did
a couple of intros, and decided it was hard to learn, so
I started flashkit
What is your
view of the current use of flash?
I like flash used well. It is easy to overkill in flash,
and I am over tacky intros and reducdant text effects. I
hate full screen, well dislike to the point where I will
not view a site that forces it upon me, and the thing that
banes me the most, is having to wait for a contact us section
to load.
I like to think the way we use flash at
flashkit is good, functional without over use, we use it
on the sounds, and the fonts sections well. We are about
to add a new flash based menu and tree explorer as well
taking advantage of the xml ability of flash.
Who do you
feel is advancing the use of flash the most?
There are lots of contexts to this, design wise I love the
work of egomedia.com, wddg.com and countless others, technically
I love our sound system, with built in realtime EQ, now
that was tricky. I love the technology and cencept/interface
system to Balthaser FX, and some of the mad stuff coming
out of Den Ivanov is pretty mind bending as well.
Every day I see flash and design that inspires, I am looking
forward to getting my personal site out there one day!
Who has been
your greatest inspiration?
I think I struggle to identify a single point of greatest
inspiration. I take my inspiration everywhere, I see great
ideas all the time, and they whil and churn constantly to
make new ones.
Where do you
see the future of flash?
A new standard/protocol for the web. I must say though I
do like the concepts behind SVG as well, xml controlled
vector imaging, I think that integrates technologies well.
I think there will always be standards that are in competition
constantly, and flash will be one of these. I have seen
the popularity of Flash, and I see it going a long way,
as its core functionality increase to cope with our increased
demands, network and computing technology, wireless applications,
and who knows, even flash on my washing machine!
I don't want to speculate too much on the future, I like
surprises.
What advice
would you give to budding flashers?
Give it a go. You decide your own level of involvement.
What can Flash Kit Singapore 2001
attendees expect from you?
A big smile, if it goes well a big ego, if it goes terribly
I'll be hard to find :D
Any closing
words?
I look forward to meeting many of you, it has been a real honour to be a part of a system of sharing and collaboration, where people can discuss, exchange, and learn from our respective efforts. Flash Kit has been a lot of fun, building a community that I would like to think… works.
