Where
are you from?
Western Australia.
Where
did you grow up?
I don't know, it hasn't really happened yet. I'll keep you posted.
What
are your pastimes and interests?
I love to read. About anything really: science, philosophy, politics, humor, fitness, Macintosh computers. I've been a big Apple fan ever since my last Windows box got struck by lightning - I took it as a sign. Interest wise, I try to be active in environmental and human rights issues, because social responsibility is a pretty big deal to me.
What's
your favorite saying or cliché?
"No, I'm not 16… I just look that way." It's not my favorite, I just find myself saying it a lot.
What's
your favorite movie?
At the moment? Wonder Boys. It was Michael Douglas' best performance yet.
What's
your favorite cocktail?
Shot of Malibu rum, with soda water and two dashes of Sprite.
When
did you first get involved with flash?
1998 when Flash 2 was still current. I did this particularly awful animated navigation for the local Internet café, which included a spinning apple (their logo, its an orchard town) and some buttons. I didn't pick it up again until version 3 when I had to start writing tutorials about the program.
What
is your view of the current use of flash?
As far as design goes, I love the underground and independent stuff. Take a look at a site like requiemforadream.com. That kind of thing showcases Flash at its best from an artistic expression point of view. Plus there are more functional things being done on sites like Madonna.com or even Coke.
Of course, you can't forget the real old-fashioned animation that gets done with Flash, whether it be Disney or Joe Cartoon. Even without a line of ActionScript that stuff makes Flash worth the price in m y eyes.
Who
do you feel is advancing the use of flash the most?
A lot of people name a designer or programmer in this space, but I'm going to go more generic and say every one of the people that runs a little community site, and the people who contribute to it just because they can. That's more important than code or graphics.
Where
do you see the future of flash?
Flash will continue to grow in terms of usage, but as with most things, the ways in which it gets used have already started to settle into definite patterns. It'll be interesting to see how Flash plays a role in future handheld computing developments and even Microsoft's .NET.
What
advice would you give to budding flashers?
Anybody can be a great Flasher. Whether you're coming at it from an artistic, design or engineering perspective; my advice is to team up with other people that have complementary skills and see what develops.
What
can Flash Kit Singapore 2001 attendees expect from you?
Hopefully some interesting information that they haven't heard before!
Any
closing words?
Tobey Maguire. Spiderman. 2002.
