    Channel Surfing

I came up with this idea the other day for a community project. Its called channel surfing and what it is, is a collection of flash animation shorts that will play one right after another in short segments, just like channel surfing on your television. These clips would come from anyone. Feel free to use stuff you've already made, or if you want create something completely new (preferable). All authors will be credited in the end. If you're interested in adding a clip of your own here's some guidelines.

    - Each clip must have a frame size of [Changed, read my next post]
    - All sound files must be sent to me along with the clip so I can make sure it is properly compressed.
    - Each clip can be no longer than 15 seconds.
    - Please no excessive swearing, excessive violence, pornographic material, or fighting stickmen (I could see recieveing a lot of these).
    - I'll be taking these until the end of march. If anyone can't finish it by then, let me know.
    - [Just added] The frame rate is 24 fps. If thats too much, work with the default 12 fps and spread them out.

I will be adding a clip or two of my own, along with an intro and outro and credits reel.

If you want to add things like mute or a volume bar that goes up and down like you would see on a television display, let me know afterwards so I can add it in and keep it all uniform.

If you know anyone else interested that doesn't come here, let them know. Also, depending on the amount of submissions I get, I might not be able to put them all in, so focus on quality over quantitiy.

When you send the clip, make sure it is the fla and not the swf.

Send all submissions clip or questions to
    mcoady9959@rogers.com
    or simply pm me.

Have fun and get those creative juices flowing.

sounds like a good idea... 15 seconds aint too long too so i may well give this a go... hey i can add it to my final year project

if you want to do volume control etc you may want to give out a default flash file that has the size of the animation frame... i.e if people want to do wide screen you dont want 7 different aspects throughout the movie! if u get what i mean

its been awhile since we've had anyone trying to get a community project together, lets hope it works!

Oh good point. Aspect ratios. Alright, forget what I said above about frame size. The new frame size is 400 X 300 for full screen, or 400 X 225 if you want the wide screen bars. I hope this doesn't mess anyone up if they already started.

    Urm.....ok!

Question, does it have to have sound?

Also what's happening to it after it's done?

No, doesn't have to have sound, I just figured most people would want sound. When its done, I'll put it all together into a package. Not too sure what will happen from there. I just think it'll be something unique a lot of people will enjoy.

Yea, olly, I guess these short clips are right up your alley.

I'm hoping fiddlesticks will drop by too.

    Ok I've started it.
It will have voices I've decided but no music, I can never find stuff that fits properly.

    I have another question.
Why does the background have to be white?
When you channel hop you get all sorts of colours.

Its just so that people don't work with a black background, then send it to me and wonder why it doesn't look proper. If you want a colored background, simply make your bottom layer what ever color you want it to be. I guess it was kind've misleading.

I almost forgot! Someone mentioned this on another forum. Frame rate. I'm going to say 24 because a lot of people find 12 is too slow so you have that extra room to work with, but if you find 24 too much, you can simply spread out your frames to keep up.

What about non flash made content? Like maby 3D work or from other advanced animation programs?

It will still follow the guidelines as well as be in an fla ofcorse .

Someone else was asking me about non flash stuff too. The only problem I have with that is you'd have to sacrifice either the small file size, or the quality of that particular clip. If you want to make something like that, it'll have to be very short, is that alright?

Well, we've got 4 clips so far. I put them all in a row with a little tv style static fuzz in between to see how its gonna look and let me be the first to say this is gonna be the coolest thing on the internet. The only downside for you guys is, I will not be releasing any of it until it is complete. I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise .

I also wanted to take a second to remind everyone of a few basic points.

    - I can't do anything with the swf file, I need the fla.
    - You must send me the audio files you used along with the fla. I've got a lot of different sounds to work with and this is the only way I can work with them.
    - My email address is mcoady9959@rogers.com. Do not send these to the address I use here at flash kit, its just a hotmail address that can't hold much. The address I just gave you is my ISP email address and I can take files of any size.
    - When you send me the email, pm me to make sure I got it. Some of my mail isn't making it through for some reason.
    - Remember to work in 24 fps. Its a real task having to adjust every single key frame to match.

But great job guys and keep up the good work. I'm so excitied.

Cool, I can't wait to see them all!
Mine is done except for sound, so you'll be getting it either tommorow or the day after pooon

Also, wasn't the last CAP that super hero thing, I remember doing a bad guy for it but nothing much happened after that...

I made one.. but I've been sniffing glue for about 72 hours on end so it's not the greatest of animations..

I'll touch it up a bit and send it in.
