Im trying to get a gradient background into swish and im having no luck. I hope someone can help me out.

ADC2001,
create a gradient jpg the size of your stage in your favourite graphics editor and import it into swish. Place it as you bottom layer. Thats it unless I'm missing something in your post.

hats what i figured was needed to be done. I was trying to manipulate swishes color palete but had no luck. Maybe thats something that should be on the swish wish list. Color manipulation.
