One for all the professional designers. When you have created your sites how do you go about hosting them.

Do you rent a dedicated server or webspace and what sort of prices do you get charged?

Well i started by buying a chunk of web space from a reseller (about 50 mb think i paid $125.oo for a year - shop around) and using that to host my own site then adding other sites to it. i got around the domain name bit by using shadowing..the compny http://www.buydomains.com offers a service where even if you host it on a geocities site, it will still display the domain name you registered in the URL box..

    webspace

I do hosting (via reseller packages), and sell a typical NT 50MB account for £49, 200MB £149, and unlimited space for £200 per year (handy for other sites on the same space).

I also do a unique IP address (100% essential for search engine hits) hosting for £220 on a Unix box.
If getting hits from a search engine is important to you, the hosting web space is VERY important, don't expect to get results from search engines on a virtual server (most hosting companies) with a shared IP address ... for reasons that requires another thread to go into detail.

Example: http://www.williamorbit.com (one of my sites) is normally number 1 on the search engines because of the way I host it.

Those prices are quite low, But shop around!

BTW my name is Craig as well, My question is, Can you give some more advice about how to start your own Web Hosting Co.
not neccessarily web design. More like an ASP(Application Service Provider).
What does the process entail to begin?
    Best Regards,

    Exo

    Hey Exocet,

My hosting company is called Exosphere:
    http://www.exosphere.co.uk or http://www.exo.co.uk

Running a hosting company, or simply a reseller requires a good understanding of FTP, file types, Telenet, Logs, DNS, IP etc if you are to support your clients in any way.
In particular the domain side of things, domain transfers, DNS changes etc etc.
be prepared to always be available, by e-mail or phone!

Apart from that, the rest is all admin: go buy yourself a chunk of space from one of the many big hosting companies and sell !
I would suggest to start small, sell to your mates, people you know ... but don't make any money from them : just get to grips with it, then sell to the public.

    I have a question....

Someone a couple of weeks back posted that http://www.namezero.com was giving away domain names. So I went there and got a couple. Now that I have the domain name I cant figure out how to upload files or even if you can. I have looked for some kind of support there but still am clueless as to what to do next. Any suggestions?? ~Jer~

At NameZero you dont upload anything you dont even have any web space with them. All NameZero does is give you the "address" and you make your site at like http://www.geocities.com and then NameZero umm like "links" the .com address to your geocities or whatever free hosting your using. Sorry 1/2 asleep cant think of the proper words.

Oooh btw the ad-frame is getting changed I read it on the message boards posted by a NameZero-Rep.

    Good Offer

Show me your work - if you have a good flash site for non commercial uses (portfolios or applications are fine) then I will host it on my unlimited space/bandwidth for nothing. The space is fast and no banners/popups or anything will be put on by me - no strings at all but only if I like what your doing as I beleive in encouraging talent. If interested mail me at gq@onepage.co.uk and I'll consider your offer - if you want to check the speed of the space go to http://www.drivewayadvisoryservice.co.uk which although under construction gives you an idea of the speed a 140kb file will load with no preloader or anything

    williamorbit.com

    Dean/Gracust,
Thanks for your kind words, dean: yes, I built the entire site, flash intro is 100% in Swish and hosting by myself because I got fed up of being ripped off by all these hosting companies that can't keep a server going 7 days a week.

    PS
    vmjolt's deal looks good.

FOR ALL LOOKING FOR A CHEAP HOST YET FAST CONNECTION!!! http://www.5bucksamonth.com $5 A MONTH FOR 25MB OF SPACE! NEED MORE? 25 BLOCKS OF MB SOLD FOR, YOU GUESSED IT, $5 I found this and I was soooo happy, better than $20-40 hosts. And if your going to register domain, register there, $15 a year instead of $35.

    Hi Richard

Tell me more about the way you host sites to optimize them for search engine hits?

If it would take to long you can email me.

I have an ecommerce site I'm working on that really needs to be searchable. I think at the moment it might be on a virtual server.

If you're convincing I could get the client to switch - no promises though.
