Confused about file size??? It goes from 4k to over 1meg when I import a 140k graphic? The begining is all fonts and is about 4k , am i doing something wrong when I import? Or is there a way to make the swish go invisible after it plays once then just have my graphic lined up behind the swish movie? Sorry if this is an easy one but its only my second day.

    Mucho thanks in advance....

The size of the SWI file, or the size of the SWF file?
A 140K JPEG image could easily add 1 meg to the SWI file.

    Cheers, David.

You need Fireworks to shrink that image!
Why is that image file so large?

Fireworks will get it to about 50K without any loss.

    http://www.macromedia.com/software/fireworks/trial/

Install, paste the image and run the "Export Wizard"
    Fireworks does the rest.

You don't need fireworks to get image sizes down, most paint packages (i.e. Paint Shop Pro etc) have compression methods which are variable.
Fireworks is no better than the others, but it does have a good "wizard" for new users.

A good test is to save serveral different versions using various compressions and see what appears to be acceptable, it can vary depending on the content of the picture.

Then try the import into Swish, I always find the compression in Swish very good, for Example: a good 72k JPG - converts to a 30K SWF!

ahhhh ha! I get it now....

Ok I understand, I was looking at the .swi file, now that I have published it to a to a .swf it is only 95k.

    Thanks tons,

    p.s.
thats some pretty good compression, when i winzip a jpeg it does almost nothing.

    compression

When compresing your jpg look at the level of compression. In fireworks and photoshop 5.5 you can actually have four windows up to compare the quality of the image on the screen. In many cases a level of 30 is OK. Despite what has been said above, I have found fireworks to produce better, smaller images than photoshop, or anything else!

Why bother when Fireworks does that for you in 1 click?

Fireworks is without a doubt the best program for reducing
file size while maintaining image integrity.

Not to mention how easy macromedia programs are to crack!

I have PSP and Adobe 5.5.

Animation shop is a great program for anigifs
and PSP also has great tools. It's a bit more flexible with formats and pasting than Adobe. As far as compressing, it sucks.

Adobe is great for working in layers and adding text.
Adobe rocks the hardest for it's selection of filters.

I use all three at one time, but I always export in
    Fireworks.

    Why bother With downloads

    Go to
    http://www.imagemechanic.com/
    and optimize you image online.
The engine of the compression , is the same as used by Ulead PhotoImpact, and believe compared to Fireworks it compresses much better with a smaller file size.
