When I was younger -- back in 1923 -- I had a neighbor lady who had a boyfriend. They were elderly. One day the old man visited the old lady for an afternoon ride in the jallopy. The old man got out, left the car running--locked the doors! Walked up the walk to the door of the old lady ginger house to get the old lady. As he made his way up the side walk, the car began its trek. The old man had left the transmission in the 'drive' position. The car drove up the road by itself, passing onlookers who strolled carelessly with their lovers in arm, or the children running along chasing after a puppy. Birds sang in trees and it was a beautiful glistening summer's day. Then to everyone's surprize a HUGE CRASH broke the lulling and intoxicating atmosphere. The car had taken a left and drove completely into a neighbor's livingroom--where it came to rest idling.
The old man--still oblivious to the entire situation walked his old lady down the walk to where he has left the car just moments before. Dumbfounded and unsure of his actions, he removed his hat, scratched and his hair--as he had one hair left--and walked arm in arm with his old lady to the neighborhood cafe for pie and coffee--giggling and laughing about the good old days, back when Moses coached the football team.
There is another story I heard not long ago about an alcoholic who would drink and drive. One day his wife goes out to the garage to get the car--she needs to go shopping. He had been out late drinking. When she opens the garage door she notices a stench--like a dead animal. Getting in the car she notices the windshield in broke. So she gets out to inspect the car further. She discovers a dead body stuck to the grill and bumper which had been dragged under the car until the legs were ground down to the bone.
Nice!

How are you gonna park there Honey?
Just let me do the drivin' will ya?
Here is the man, a police photo. Police said that although the man was incoherent, listless, and gazed at bright objects, he did without question mumble something quite clearly, as one man stated, something about the war of 1812.

That was my first thought when I read that he drove 3 miles with the body in his windshield before he was stopped.
How many people and families did he pass on the road?
